This composite photo shows the eclipse progress from first contact until sunset. Images of the sun are 10 minutes apart. Surprisingly clear, transparent skies prevailed all day as can be seen in the photo. The low altitude of the sun made it appear larger than normal to the naked eye due to the illusion that always makes the sun or moon larger near the horizon. Notice the reddening of the sun's disk as it drops lower in the atmosphere.
