Court Duty Tutorial


The following is a simple tutorial on court duties for individual matches. See bottom for a glossary.

Mejirushi (tasuki): put red mejirushi on left name card senshu (Miyashiro), put white mejirushi on right name card senshu (Sato)

Timekeepers: flip red and white score indicators down, reset clock, raise yellow flag.
Note: for SCKF, time limit is usually 3 minutes for kyu divisions, 4 minutes for yudansha divisions, 5 minutes for individual and team championships, but consult the program.

Senshu: red prepares to enter the court on the right side of the shushin, white prepares to enter on the left side of the shushin

Shinpan and scorekeepers: ready for match to begin

Senshu: each take a few steps into the court, rei, 3 steps forward ending with the right foot on the starting line, draw shinai and sonkyo
Shushin:
Hajime!

Timekeepers: start timer, lower yellow flag

Senshu: stand and begin the shiai. Eventually red scores a men point. Shinpan indicate the point by red flags 45deg up.

Shushin: Men ari!

Timekeepers: stop timer, raise yellow flag, flip up 1st red indicator

Senshu: return to center

Scorekeepers: mark "M" for red senshu
Shushin:
Nihon-me!

Timekeepers: start timer, lower yellow flag

Senshu: resume the shiai. Eventually red goes out of bounds. Shinpan indicate the hansoku by red flags 45deg down.

Shushin: (flags straight up) Yame!

Timekeepers: stop timer, raise yellow flag

Senshu: return to center

Shushin: (to red senshu) Hansoku ikkai!

Scorekeepers: mark a triangle for red senshu
Shushin:
Hajime!

Timekeepers: start timer, lower yellow flag

Senshu: resume the shiai. Eventually red drops shinai. Shinpan indicate the hansoku by red flags 45deg down.

Shushin: (flags straight up) Yame!

Timekeepers: stop timer, raise yellow flag

Senshu: return to center

Shushin: (to red senshu) Hansoku nikai!
(raises white flag)
Ippon ari!

Timekeepers: flip up 1st white indicator

Scorekeepers: mark a 2nd triangle for red senshu, mark "H" for white senshu
Shushin:
Shobu!

Timekeepers: start timer, lower yellow flag

Senshu: resume the shiai. Eventually red goes out of bounds. Shinpan indicate the hansoku by red flags 45deg down.

Shushin: (flags straight up) Yame!

Timekeepers: stop timer, raise yellow flag

Senshu: return to center

Shushin: (to red senshu) Hansoku ikkai!

Scorekeepers: mark a 3rd triangle for red senshu
Shushin:
Hajime!

Timekeepers: start timer, lower yellow flag

Senshu: resume the shiai. Eventually they get into tsubazeriai and remain there.

Shushin: Wakare!

Timekeepers: do nothing, time keeps running

Senshu: separate into kamae (in place, without returning to the center)

Shushin: Hajime!

Senshu: resume the shiai. Eventually time runs out.

Timekeepers: (stand and raise yellow flag) Time!

Shushin: (flags straight up) Yame!

Timekeepers: sit and lower yellow flag

Senshu: return to center

Timekeepers: reset the timer
Note: in semi-finals, finals, and championship matches, there is no encho time limit (shiai continues until winner is determined) and no further timekeeping is necessary for the match (ignore timekeeping actions in the following sections).

 

 

Shushin: Encho, hajime!

Timekeepers: start timer, lower yellow flag

Senshu: resume the shiai. Eventually red scores a kote point. Shinpan indicate the point by red flags 45deg up.

Shushin: Kote ari!

Timekeepers: stop timer, raise yellow flag, flip up 2nd red indicator

Senshu: return to center

Scorekeepers: mark "K" for red senshu

Shushin: Shobu ari!

Senshu: sonkyo, put away shinai, stand, step back 5 steps, rei, leave the court

Scorekeepers: mark red path upwards in tree, cross out white senshu's name
