SCKF Iaido Shinsa Information

Shinsa (promotional examination) will be at Norwalk Dojo for ranks 4kyu to 1dan.
Note: 6kyu and 5kyu exam will be at your own dojo (not the shinsa), but the applicants must still be included on the application form.

• application form (pdf)
  • to be turned in and signed by the iaido head instructor
  • for members registered outside of SCKF, the form also needs to be signed by the federation president
  • see submission notes below
  • application deadline is 11/15
  • membership deadline was 7/31
  • written test deadline for 1kyu and 1dan is also 11/15 (see below)

• tentative schedule
  • 8:00am: Norwalk Dojo gym opens
  • 8:00am: start sign in and sword check for seminar and shinsa, post testing details
  • 9-11am: seminar
  • 11:30am: start shinsa

• written tests are required for everyone testing for 1kyu and above
  • download the SCKF written test form (pdf) and write your answer on this form
  • tests must include name, dojo, and requested rank, and must be in English only
  • upload your written test using this link
    be sure to click submit at the bottom of the form, which will open a new page with the message "Your response has been recorded"
  • deadline is Friday, 11/15/24

• application package submission notes
  • for SCKF iaido head instructors
    • fill out and sign the application form
    • scan and upload the form to your dojo's "to_sckf" google drive folder with the name doj_241117_iai_sa.pdf, where "doj" is your dojo's abbreviation
    • if you have non-SCKF students, fill out, sign, and upload a separate form with the name doj_241117_iai_sa_fed.pdf, where "fed" is the federation's abbreviation
    • email Jean Kodama when the file has been uploaded
      • she can also assist in uploading the form, as well as obtaining approval from other federation presidents
  • for non-SCKF iaido head instructors
    • fill out and sign the application form, including signature of your federation president
    • scan and email the form to Jean Kodama by the deadline
  • submit payment at the seminar, Saturday preferred. Or, you may arrange to deliver payment to Jean Kodama prior to the seminar.

• menjo (rank certificates)
  • a menjo printing request will be sent to AUSKF shortly after the shinsa
    • menjo will be printed with names as they appear in the database
    • note that AUSKF only offers English menjo
  • shinsa results and menjo fees will be sent to the iaido head instructors shortly after the shinsa
    • make check payable to Southern California Kendo Federation (not abbreviated "SCKF").
    • mail or otherwise arrange to deliver your check to Jean Kodama within one week of the shinsa
