Planets on 25 Sept. 2022

These shots of Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars were taken on 25 Sept. 2022, near the time of opposition for Jupiter (our closest approach), so it is at its maximum apprent size. As of this time, we've passed Saturn (opposition was on 14 Aug.), so it is getting smaller. Mars will appear largest on 2 Dec. All planets are shown below at the same scale. On this date the sizes of the planets (in arcseconds) are:

  • Saturn: 18.21
  • Jupiter: 49.87
  • Mars: 11.63
as listed in https://timeanddate.com.

The shots of Jupiter and Mars are timelapse animations. Both were shot every 5 minutes for over 4 hours, so the relative speeds of rotation can be compared.

  • Jupiter: 9h 56m
  • Mars: 24h 37m
See rotation periods (Wikipedia).
