M97 & M108

This image of M97, the Owl Nebula (lower left), and M108 (upper right) was squeezed between the 1st quarter moon and fog. These two objects in Ursa Major are in the same telescopic field, but are very different physically. What we see in M97 is a set of gas shells ejected from a dying star about 2000 light-years away (now the 14th magnitude white dwarf star in the center). M108, on the other hand, is a spiral galaxy at an estimated distance of 46 million light-years.
