Perseid Meteor - 11 Aug. 2012

This 30-second exposure (almost) caught the brightest Perseid meteor of the weekend (at least while I was looking). Most Perseid meteors are hard to see as they tend to be dim and fast moving, compared to meteors from other meteor showers, but this one was relatively slow-moving and left a trail which was visible for a few seconds. It was also bright enough to be caught on a real-time video (see the day 1 video).

It's interesting to note that while the meteor looked a brilliant green to the eye, it progressed from green to pink to white in the DSLR camera photo, and just plain white to the GoPro HD camera in video mode.

Technical Info: 30 sec. @ ISO1600, Nikon D700, Sigma 15mm f/2.8 lens, fixed tripod mounting.
