    Kodama Jean took flowers on behalf of Norwalk Dojo to Murakami sensei's home, where he has been receiving hospice care since last Thursday.

  • Sun 1/18/15: SCKF New Year's Party, Alhambra
    Among the honorees will be Amano Shotaro (new 4dan), Domen Sumi (new 4dan), and Kodama Jean (2014 SCKF executive secretary, 2015 president). Additional attendees include Yoon Brian, Kariya Yoshijiro, Fu Linda, Trost Jeffrey, Mrs Amano, Mrs Domen, Mrs Yoshimura, Cho In Ho.

  • Mon 1/19/15: Norwalk keiko
    To celebrate Kodama Jean's 60th birthday this month, everyone did 60 mens, and were treated to chocolate banana whipped cream cake.

  • Sat-Sun 1/24-25/15: FIK shinpan seminar, Las Vegas
    Kodama Jean will be attending. Also, AUSKF is soliciting volunteer shiai-sha (ten 3-4dan over 21, selected by AUSKF), with Fri/Sat hotel, Sat/Sun bento, and Sat dinner to be covered, along with a $100 travel stipend.

  • Tue 1/27/15: funeral service for Murakami Sensei, Industry Hills
    Murakami Ichiro sensei passed away January 14th after one week of hospice care in his home. He was vice president of the Internation Kendo Federation, immediate past president of AUSKF, past president of SCKF, advisor to Industry Sheriff's and All Nations Church Dojos, and a friend and mentor to all. Services will be held Tuesday at 1pm at Industry Hills Expo Center.

    Report from Linda: "The tournament was fun. Tournament participants were fewer than usual. Daniel made it to top eight in his division; they even gave him a point for gyaku-do. Team: we borrowed two people from Steveston dojo. We got to second round and lost to Team Canada women's team. Team Canada men's team won first. Jeff did a pretty good job as mom and cheerleader and holding our stuff. :-)"

    Thank you to everyone who came out to help clean up and organize our areas: Linda Fu, Janet and Lance Hahn, Steve Yoshimura, Mr and Mrs Yoshimura, Mrs Domen, Steve and William Liao, Byung Kim, Brian, Kay, and Courtney Yoon, Minyoung Kim and Daniel, Korhan Tekin (if we missed anyone let us know!).

    Federation dues are by age:
          17 and under: $39
          18 and over: $66
    Deadline is Fri Mar 6. If you cannot bring payment to the dojo by this date please email norwalkkendo@gmail.com so we can at least get you signed up.

    Note: please sign up now even if you don't think you'll be able to participate regularly until later in the year. There is no benefit to delaying (federation dues are not prorated, so they are the same whether you join now or in December). For returning yudansha, your membership will be continuous from last year and you will be eligible for the SCKF Championship tournaments in June and September. And, this year we need as many members as possible, as we are celebrating our 50th anniversary!

    All former members are welcome back! If you know anyone who is "missing in action", please contact them to let them know.

    Norwalk participants included Domen Sumi, Fu Linda, Yoon Courtney (women's), Trost Jeffrey (1-2dan), Chang Jeffrey, Hamamura Yu, Nguyen Emil, Nakagawa Takeshi, Yoon Brian (3-4dan), Kodama Jean (senior).

    Congratulations to Domen Sumi for winning 3rd place in the women's division and to Hamamura Yu for 3rd place in the 3-4dan division. Also, Domen Sumi and Yoon Courtney were on the SCKF women's team and Chang Jeffrey and Hamamura Yu were on the SCKF yudansha team, both of which won NCKF. Great job everyone!

    Thanks very much to Yoon Brian and Fu Linda for all the planning for the trip. A good time was had by all in Santa Cruz at the Pier, Boardwalk, and Mystery Spot!

  • Sat 3/21/15: SEJSCC Recognition Dinner
    Kodama Jean and Ji Daniel will be among the honorees. 5:30p social hour, 6:30p dinner.

    Kendo has toban from noon to prepare inarizushi and centerpieces. Please let an officer know asap if you can help with toban and/or attend the dinner.

    Kishimoto sensei and Maehara sensei from Japan will be visiting, along with Kato sensei from AUSKF.

  • Fri 5/8/15: 16WKC send off party
    Instead of ato-geiko we had a send off party for Domen Sumi, who is leaving for Japan to compete in the 16th World Kendo Championships as a member of Team USA's women's team. Good luck Sumi!

    Team USA joined us again (those that are not already in Japan!), including Huh sensei, Shinada sensei, Harada sensei, and Hatakeyama sensei.

  • Fri 5/22/15: Norwalk 50th anniversary planning meeting
    We ended 1st practice at 8:30 and 2nd practice at 9:15 so we could start the meeting at 9:30pm.

    We will have kendo and iaido practice.

  • Fri 5/29/15: monthly dojo tournament; no ato geiko
    We will end practice as soon as the tournament is done, so we can all go home and watch ustreams of Domen Sumi and Team USA compete at 16WKC.

    Domen Sumi is a member of Team USA's women's team. Norwalk supporters traveling to Japan include Saito sensei, Kariya Yoshijiro, and the Domen family. See the 16WKC link for more information, including links to real-time video and results (as they become available).

    Congratulations to Sumi and Team USA women's team for winning 3rd place! Men's team also won 3rd place (both lost to 1st place Japan).

      Okuno sensei, Ralutin sensei, Tekin Korhan, and Kariya Yoshijiro will be attending.

      Congratulations to Tekin Korhan for winning 3rd place in the 1kyu-1dan division in the Iaido Championships, and for passing his 1dan shinsa!

    • Sat 6/20/15: Gakuen Kendo Demonstration, 11:30-11:50am
      We will be putting on a demonstration for Japanese school students and parents. Volunteers include Kodama Jean, Hamamura Yu, Nguyen Emil, Fu Linda, Ji Daniel. We will meet in the judo room at 10:45am to set up and review the program. Thank you to everyone who is helping!

Kudos to Fu Linda (placed 3rd women's dan) and Kariya Yoshijiro (won 3 matches and, after a 9-minute encho, narrowly missed making it to the round of 8).

      Ondo practice for the cultural festival will be conducted in the front parking lot on Mondays and Thursdays in July from 7:30pm. For Monday keiko, please do not park in the area by the ondo circle, and be careful of the ondo participants, especially small children.

    • Wed 7/8/15: Camp Hanabi Kendo Demonstration, 1:30-2:30pm
      Volunteers please meet at 12:30 to change, set up, and go over the plan.

      Thank you to Kodama Jean, Kariya Yoshijiro, Yoon Brian, Yoon Courtney, Ji Daniel for volunteering. We taught fifty kids kendo in less than an hour!

    • Fri-Mon 7/10-20/15, Sign up for carnival work duty shifts!
      We need all kenshi, family, and friends to help out at our yearly cultural festival. Please sign up for set up duty and booth duty with the officers. See the kendo carnival page for more information on what's happening.

      For this special practice will be hosting youth training for SCKF kenshi 18 and under, regardless of whether entered in junior nationals. There will be godo geiko for all at the end.

      Other youth training will occur 7/5 at University of La Verne from 8:30-10am, and 7/26 at OCB from 10am-noon.

    • Fri 7/17/15: kata practice, 9:15pm
      Those attending the kata seminar will review all 10 kata alongside ato geiko.

    • Fri 7/19/15: SCKF kata seminar, Covina Dojo
      Required for all 2dan and above. Norwalk attendees include Yoon Courtney, Yoon Brian, Cho In Ho*, Karyiya Yoshijiro, Kodama Jean (*=no bento).

    • Fri 7/31/15: Takenouchi sensei keiko, Huntington Beach
      Just announced 6/28: godo geiko with Yuya Takenouchi, 22-year-old All Japan Champion. No keiko at Norwalk. Instead, kenshi 18 and under are encouraged to participate in the youth keiko from 6-7:30pm, and everyone else the adult keiko from 7:30-9pm.

      Tournament report from Kay: "Daniel Ji did very well and won two matches but lost his third match playing against a kenshi from WKF who ended up winning 1st place. Courtney Yoon placed first in both individuals and team. Their matches have been uploaded on our FB page."

      Norwalk participants include Kim Ryan, Cheon Kevin, Cho Ryan, Cho Daniel (11-13 kyu); Kim Noah (14-15 kyu); Kariya Yoshijiro, Kodama Jean (shinpan). Sign in is at 8am. Chang Jeffrey also attended to shinpan.

    • Thursdays 8/27/15 thru 10/15/15: Kata Practice, 9:30pm
      From now until the fall shinsa we will have kata practice on Thursdays after Dance Club is done with the gym (typically 9:20-9:30, but could go to 9:45). All kenshi 3kyu and above are required to practice kata regardless of (but especially to prepare for) shinsa. If you cannot make it Thursday, you may make it up the following Monday. Lack of participation will make you ineligible for shinsa this fall and next spring.

      Planning meeting for 50th anniversary. We will end first keiko at 8:45pm and second keiko at 9:30pm.

      To prepare for Sunday's team championships, shiai times tonight will be 3min no extension for kyu and 5min no extension for yudansha.

      Norwalk Dojo is hosting the October SCKF godo geiko. We need yudansha (especially 4dan and above) to come out and support this event at Chuo Dojo from 6-7pm (please arrive 5:30pm).

    • 10/19/15 through 11/6/15: 50th Anniversary Training
      From now until the 50th anniversary celebration on 11/8 we will have dry runs and special training for the tournament.

    • Fri 10/23/15: Sister Dojo Kachinuki Sen Workshop, 7:30-9:30pm
      Since part of our 50th anniversary tournament will be kachinuki style (winner remains), we will conduct a practice run tonight with our sister dojo Covina, Gedatsu, and Costa Mesa.

      This will let kenshi become familiar with kachinuki sen, but more importantly it will provide court duty training for yudansha and volunteers. And we can work out some ideas for consolation rounds. At the end we will do some jigeiko.

      After our huge 50th Anniversary event, for our year end party we will have a small private gathering for current active members, their immediate families, and a few special guests.       At the beginning of practice we observed a moment of silence for Fukawa Koji sensei, who passed away this morning. He was a member of Norwalk Dojo from the late 1960's until retiring a few years ago due to health problems.
